Embracing New Horizons: My First 15 Days in Italy with EYE
As I stepped off the plane in Italy, a wave of excitement and anticipation washed over me. I was about to embark on a journey that would shape both my personal and professional life in unimaginable ways. My name is Sophyline, and this is the story of my first 15 days in Italy as part of the Erasmus for Young Entrepreneurs (EYE) program.
A Brief Introduction
I come from a background rich in education and passion. Having completed my VAP in web marketing strategy and digital communication project management, I ventured into entrepreneurship. I have always been fascinated by the growth and prosperity of businesses in different environments. My interests span various fields, from marketing to project management, with a particular attraction to innovative business solutions that have a positive impact. This multifaceted interest led me to apply for the EYE program, eager to explore new horizons and gain invaluable experience abroad.
The Decision to Participate in EYE
I have always wanted to immerse myself in a foreign country. Last year, I participated in a Spanish women’s incubation program, The Break. I spent a month in Cabo de Palos, Spain, with 14 women entrepreneurs from all over Europe. This enriching human experience allowed me to create strong bonds and improve my English, especially in everyday conversations. By the end of the day, I no longer knew which language I was speaking! This adventure gave me the taste to renew the experience and improve my linguistic skills, this time in Italian.
The decision to join the EYE program was influenced by a blend of curiosity and inspiration. A close friend who had previously participated in the program shared their transformative experience, sparking my desire to embark on a similar journey. The opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a foreign country, learn from seasoned entrepreneurs, and immerse myself in a different culture was too enticing to pass up. I was ready to step out of my comfort zone and embrace the unknown.
The First Days: A Mix of Emotions
Arriving in Italy, I was greeted by picturesque landscapes and the warm Mediterranean climate. The first 15 days were a whirlwind of new experiences and emotions. From navigating the cobblestone streets of the city to tasting the rich flavors of Italian cuisine, every moment was a sensory delight. However, the most significant part of my experience was my integration into the team at Gav Projects.
Challenges and Discoveries
Arriving in Italy was not without its challenges. Taxis are very expensive and do not use meters, which can make travel costly. Additionally, finding accommodation proved complicated as most landlords prefer long-term contracts of at least a year. It took time to find suitable housing. Added to this was the intense heat, which made the days sometimes exhausting. Despite these challenges, the people are adorable and kind, making every interaction pleasant.
Embracing the Work Culture
Gav Projects welcomed me with open arms. The team was not only professional but also incredibly friendly and humorous. Their warmth made the transition smoother, and I quickly felt like part of the family. However, it took me some time to fully integrate into the world of Gav because all the documents are in Italian. Despite the language barrier – as not everyone spoke English or French – we found ways to communicate effectively, often resorting to a mix of broken languages, gestures, and laughter. This experience taught me the importance of adaptability and the universal language of kindness and humor.
Expectations and Reality
Before my departure, I had imagined my arrival at Gav Projects to be akin to a scene from a movie – perhaps like the serene and inspiring imagery of Elizabeth Gilbert’s “Eat, Pray, Love.” I envisioned myself soaking in the Italian culture, making meaningful connections, and gaining profound insights into the world of entrepreneurship. Reality, however, proved to be even more enriching. The daily interactions, the collaborative projects, and the exposure to new business practices have already started to shape my understanding and approach to entrepreneurship.
Growth and Learning
These initial days have been a significant period of growth. Professionally, I have been involved in various projects that challenge my skills and broaden my knowledge. From project planning to client interactions, each task is a learning opportunity. Personally, adapting to a new environment and overcoming language barriers has strengthened my resilience and adaptability. I am also improving my Italian. Although I do not yet understand everything they say, it is coming day by day.
Looking Forward
As I continue my journey in Italy with Gav Projects, I am filled with optimism and excitement. The experiences and lessons from these first 15 days have set a solid foundation for the months to come. I look forward to further immersing myself in Italian culture, building lasting relationships, and continuing my professional growth.
This adventure is just beginning, and I am eager to see where it leads. With each passing day, I am more convinced that stepping out of my comfort zone and embracing new opportunities is the key to personal and professional fulfillment.
Final Thoughts
Participating in the Erasmus for Young Entrepreneurs program is proving to be a transformative experience. The blend of professional development and cultural immersion is unparalleled. For anyone considering such a venture, I wholeheartedly encourage you to take the leap. The world is full of opportunities waiting to be explored, and programs like EYE provide the perfect platform to do so.
My journey in Italy is just beginning, and I am grateful for every moment. Here’s to many more days of learning, growing, and embracing the beautiful challenge of entrepreneurship in a foreign country.
