I am a photographer/ artist, and since this is a very uncertain profession, I decided that I should start building something more stable. Why not try to create a space where artists can meet, test their ideas, and create together? I believe the concept of an artist residency is perfect for this. However, having an idea is one thing—actually putting it into practice is a completely different reality. I needed to learn the essentials.
I had been aware of the Nocefresca art residency in Sardinia for some time, and through online research and communication, I discovered the EYE program. Nocefresca is a residency that hosts various groups of artists from all over the world in a rural village in the middle of Sardinia. When I learned about the possibility of a work exchange there, I didn’t hesitate and seized the opportunity, applying through the EYE network. Everything became clear, and I was ready to embark on a six-month journey of self-development.
The Nocefresca residency provides working space for usually 7–10 artists each month. Each artist has their own studio for the duration of the residency, where they can work, relax, and test ideas. The studios are located in a large house in the centre of the village, with a spacious courtyard where artists can meet, work together, and host workshops for the local community.
Together with Francesca, the founder of the project, we decided that my main task would be to document public events, artists’ trips, their work in progress, and the everyday life of the residency through photography and videography. I also took care of updating the website and was available to assist artists whenever issues arose. In return, Francesca introduced me to the “behind-the-scenes” workings of the project, explaining how the entire system functions. She was always helpful, enthusiastic, and generous with her knowledge.
The work exchange taught me not only how an art project like Nocefresca operates—how it is funded and how everyday challenges are solved—but, more importantly, it significantly improved my interpersonal and communication skills, boosting my confidence and self-worth.
I consider the work exchange more than beneficial. I met many new people—painters, designers, writers, and others—and formed friendships with people from all over the world who share similar interests. With new skills, valuable contacts, and mentoring from Francesca, I feel that I am on the right track for my future endeavours.
If you are hesitating about joining the EYE network, don’t worry—go for it. It might just change your life.
The exchange was a truly enriching experience. It pushed me out of my comfort zone, broadened my horizons and I feel it was absolutely worth it.
