Mid-Term Reflection on My Exchange Experience in Valencia

The first half of my exchange experience in Valencia has been a highly formative period, marked by significant personal growth, professional development, and cultural learning. This exchange has provided me with the opportunity to immerse myself in a new environment, adapt to unfamiliar circumstances, and gain hands-on experience within an international business context. Looking back on the past months, I can confidently state that this experience has not only met my expectations but has also challenged me in ways that have contributed meaningfully to my development.

From the moment I arrived in Valencia, I felt a strong sense of enthusiasm and curiosity. My first impression of the city was extremely positive. Valencia is a vibrant and dynamic city that manages to combine tradition and modernity in a unique way. The relaxed lifestyle, pleasant climate, and welcoming atmosphere made it easier for me to adjust to living abroad. At the same time, the city offers countless opportunities for cultural exploration, social interaction, and personal enrichment. This environment has played an important role in shaping my overall experience, as feeling comfortable in the city allowed me to focus more fully on my professional responsibilities and personal goals.

In addition to my positive impression of the city, I was equally enthusiastic about the company where I am completing my exchange. From the beginning, the organization sparked my interest due to its focus, structure, and overall mission. I felt that the company aligned well with my personal interests and academic background, which increased my motivation to contribute and learn. The initial welcome was warm, and I quickly noticed that the workplace culture was open, informal, and supportive. This created a strong foundation for my integration into the team.

However, the first weeks of the exchange were not without uncertainty. One of the main challenges during the initial phase was the lack of clearly defined working hours and daily routines. Unlike more structured environments I had experienced before, this setting required a high level of flexibility and self-management. At times, this uncertainty made it difficult to establish a consistent rhythm and fully understand what was expected of me. Nevertheless, this challenge gradually became an important learning experience. As time passed, communication improved, expectations became clearer, and the structure of the working days stabilized. This process taught me how to deal with ambiguity and reinforced the importance of adaptability in a professional setting.

Currently, my main responsibilities within the company are related to business development. This role has allowed me to gain insight into strategic decision-making processes, market analysis, and the long-term goals of the organization. Working in business development has been particularly valuable, as it provides a broad overview of how a company operates and grows. I collaborate closely with two colleagues from the marketing department, which has given me a deeper understanding of the relationship between marketing strategies and business development objectives. Through this collaboration, I have learned how different departments complement each other and how effective teamwork contributes to the overall success of an organization.

One of the most distinctive features of my workplace is its strong family culture. From the beginning, I felt genuinely included and supported by my colleagues. The atmosphere within the company is characterized by mutual respect, open communication, and a willingness to help one another. This sense of belonging made it easier for me to ask questions, share ideas, and take initiative. Feeling valued as a team member rather than simply an exchange student or intern significantly increased my confidence and motivation.

Despite the positive working environment, the early stages of my exchange also presented challenges related to communication. In the beginning, communication was sometimes limited or unclear, which occasionally led to confusion regarding tasks or priorities. This issue was influenced by several factors, including cultural differences and language dynamics. Within the company, communication often shifts between English and Spanish. While this multilingual environment initially felt challenging, I soon realized that it was also an opportunity to develop my language skills and cultural awareness.

As I became more accustomed to the communication style within the company, these challenges gradually diminished. Colleagues made a conscious effort to include me in conversations, explain tasks more clearly, and involve me in discussions. Over time, I began to feel more comfortable expressing myself and contributing actively. The tasks I was given became increasingly engaging and meaningful, and I felt that my input was genuinely appreciated. This progression marked an important turning point in my exchange experience, as it allowed me to fully engage with my role and develop a stronger sense of professional identity.

Throughout my exchange, I have encountered challenges on multiple levels: professional, personal, and cultural. Professionally, adapting to a new working environment and understanding the expectations of a foreign company required patience and persistence. Personally, living abroad demanded independence, self-discipline, and resilience. Culturally, adjusting to different norms, communication styles, and work ethics required openness and flexibility. These challenges often overlapped, making the experience both demanding and rewarding.

One of the most important strategies I adopted to address these challenges was proactive communication. I made a conscious effort to communicate openly with my colleagues and, in particular, with the owner of the company. By asking questions, seeking clarification, and sharing my thoughts, I was able to reduce uncertainty and build stronger professional relationships. This approach helped create a sense of trust and mutual understanding, which in turn improved collaboration and efficiency.

A key learning outcome of this exchange has been my personal development, especially in terms of communication and collaboration. I have learned how important it is to open myself up to others, actively listen, and adapt my communication style to different situations. Being placed in a new and unfamiliar environment pushed me to step outside of my comfort zone and embrace uncertainty. This experience has strengthened my self-confidence and taught me how to navigate challenges with a positive and solution-oriented mindset.

Furthermore, working in an international and multicultural environment has broadened my perspective. Switching between English and Spanish in daily communication has improved my linguistic flexibility and increased my awareness of cultural nuances. I have learned that effective communication goes beyond language proficiency; it involves empathy, patience, and cultural sensitivity. These skills are essential in today’s globalized professional world and will undoubtedly be valuable in my future career.

Regarding the objectives of the exchange program, I strongly believe that they are being achieved. For me, the main goals of the program are to gain practical experience, develop professional and personal skills, and gain insight into international business practices. At this point in the exchange, I feel that I am successfully accomplishing these objectives. The combination of hands-on work, meaningful collaboration, and cultural immersion has created a comprehensive learning experience that aligns well with the program’s intentions.

Looking back, I do not feel that there is anything significant I could have done differently during the first half of my exchange. Rather than focusing on mistakes or shortcomings, I view this experience as a process of exploration and self-discovery. I believe that it is important to learn through experience and figure out what works best, whether that involves finding smarter, faster, or more efficient approaches to tasks. This mindset has allowed me to grow organically and develop greater self-awareness.

That said, there are always opportunities for improvement. One potential adjustment that could enhance the experience for future participants is increased support during the initial phase of the exchange. The beginning can be overwhelming, especially when structures and expectations are not yet clear. While I eventually found my way, additional guidance or check-ins from the program could help participants feel more supported during this transition period. Aside from this, my overall experience with the program has been extremely positive, and I feel confident that support is available whenever needed.

As I move into the second half of my exchange, I am determined to maintain a positive and proactive attitude. I want to continue focusing on solutions rather than obstacles and make the most of every opportunity to learn and grow. One of my main goals for the remainder of the exchange is to further develop my communication skills, as I believe this is a crucial competency in any professional environment. This exchange provides an ideal setting to practice and refine these skills in a real-world, international context.

Looking toward the future, I am confident that this exchange will have a lasting impact on both my professional and personal development. The experience strengthens my CV by demonstrating adaptability, independence, and international experience. More importantly, it has allowed me to build meaningful relationships and expand my professional network. Meeting new people, working in a foreign country, and gaining insight into the business world have broadened my horizons and clarified my career aspirations.

In conclusion, my exchange in Valencia has been an exceptionally valuable and transformative experience. The combination of professional responsibilities, personal challenges, and cultural immersion has contributed significantly to my growth. I am grateful for the opportunities I have been given and motivated to continue developing myself during the remainder of the exchange. Overall, this experience has reinforced my desire to pursue further international and professional opportunities in the future and has played a crucial role in shaping my personal and professional identity.
