My name is Wies Mobach, I am a Dutch filmmaker and interdisciplinary artist with a background in Interactive/Media/Design at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague. My practice moves between filmmaking, digital technologies and spatial practices, with a deep interest in nature and in the relationship between humans and the environments we are part of.
I create unconventional films that are closer to poetic diaries than traditional documentaries. I often start from a feeling, an encounter or something I observe, without knowing exactly what the final film will become. The films remain open to interpretation, including my own, and can reveal different meanings over time. I am not primarily interested in entertaining an audience or reaching as many people as possible. For me, filmmaking is a way of paying attention, slowing down and spending time with people, places and processes that I want to understand better.
In recent years, I have been exploring our relationship with nature through travelling, volunteering and spending time in places where people are experimenting with different ways of living, farming and working together. I use film to archive, express and share these experiences. I see it as a medium that can grow with me and others, and through which I can continue to learn and develop new perspectives.
I decided to participate in Erasmus for Young Entrepreneurs because I enjoy being in international environments and collaborating with people from different backgrounds. The programme gives me the opportunity to become part of an organisation for a longer period of time while maintaining the freedom to explore, contribute and learn through direct experience.
I believe this experience can contribute to my personal growth by exposing me to different people, projects and ways of thinking and working. Being surrounded by people who take initiative, create projects and bring others together allows me to learn not only from what they do, but also from the mentality behind it. I am interested in understanding what gives people the confidence and persistence to turn an idea into something real, to involve others and to continue building even when the outcome is uncertain. At the same time, living and working in a highly social and collaborative environment challenges me to become more open, adaptable and confident in unfamiliar situations. I hope that being part of this context will expand my own sense of what is possible and encourage me to take more initiative in shaping my own projects and the way I want to live and work.
I also chose to collaborate with a project that inspires me and is close to many of my own interests and values. Being able to see how ideas around ecology, territory, community and alternative ways of working are translated into real activities and projects is extremely valuable to me. I hope to learn from their experience, contribute through my own skills and build relationships with people working around similar questions.
I see EYE as an opportunity to explore, develop my professional practice and learn from a context that is closely connected to the direction I want to take in my own life and work.
