My name is Lisa Heine, and I have a background in sustainable development, earth system governance, and project management, with a particular interest in regenerative agriculture, agroforestry, and ecosystem restoration. I mainly work on projects promoting the integration of natural capital and ecosystem services into public and private sector decision-making. Through EYE, I collaborated with a regenerative farm in Italy focused on agroforestry, biodiversity, and landscape restoration. This was an important opportunity to gain hands-on farming experience while exploring a business idea that combines regenerative landscape design, communication, and storytelling. My goal was to better understand farm-level decision-making and develop practical skills that could support future entrepreneurial activities in the regenerative agriculture sector.
During the exchange, I worked closely with the host entrepreneur to analyse existing regenerative farming systems and identify opportunities for improvement. Together we reviewed farm data, agroforestry projects, landscape features, and communication materials. I developed design concepts and visual materials for the farm’s vineyard agroforestry system and a new chestnut orchard, helping translate regenerative principles into practical implementation plans. In parallel, I supported the refinement of the farm’s mission, values, and communication approach by identifying key messages and communication opportunities for different audiences. Regular mentoring sessions provided valuable insights into regenerative farm management, strategic decision-making, and operational challenges. The working relationship was highly collaborative, combining my experience in sustainability, communication, and project management with the host’s extensive practical knowledge of regenerative farming.
The exchange provided a unique opportunity to bridge my academic and professional background with practical on-farm experience. I strengthened my knowledge of agroforestry design, regenerative farm planning, and the realities of implementing ecological systems in a working farm environment. The project also allowed me to test and refine an entrepreneurial concept that combines regenerative design, communication strategy, and narrative development for land-based businesses. Together with the host, we developed tangible outputs, including agroforestry designs, visual materials, and a communication framework that can support future farm development and outreach.
